Why Choose Us & Our Connection

We love Sunset Beach and have built our website to share our insider info — we live here, we kite here, and we want you to have the best possible experience. Whether you’re chasing waves, big air, or a downwind cruise, we’ve included this dedicated page so you know exactly where to go, what gear to bring, and how to pick the right beach for the wind that day.
Location & Why It’s Great

Located in the northern stretch of Table Bay, just north of Cape Town, Sunset Beach is one of the first beaches to pick up the Cape Doctor southeasterly wind each day — meaning you often get wind here slightly earlier than some of the more northerly spots.
The beach is wide and sandy for launching and landing, with direct views of Table Mountain and Robben Island in the distance — a beautiful setting to go with the wind and waves.

Season & Wind Conditions

Best months: Usually between October and March, with the strongest winds most consistent from November through February.

Wind directions: The primary wind that works here is from the Southeast (SE), sometimes full South (S), and it also works on a moderate Northwest (NW).

Typical wind strengths: On a good day you can expect 15–25 knots (or more) once the thermal builds. Mornings may be lighter and afternoons stronger.

Water temperature: The Atlantic side here is cold compared to tropical spots — a full wetsuit (4/3) is commonly advised in the colder months.

Conditions & Who It’s For

Water & waves: Sunset Beach is considered a wave‑spot, but not overly extreme. There are good opportunities for wave riding and freeriding.

Launch/landing area: Wide sandy beach, plenty of room.

Skill‑level advice: While beginners can go here (especially when winds are moderate and waves small), it tends to favour intermediate to advanced kiters because when the wind picks up and waves build, conditions get more challenging.

Safety: As with any open ocean spot, you should check the forecast, be aware of swell and tide changes and observe local traffic (other kiters, windsurfers). On strong wind days the waves can close out.

Best Wind/Break Match
SE / S winds: These are ideal — you’ll get good wind and decent waves, this spot fires fairly early in the day.
NW winds: This works, but can be more “off‑angle” / less ideal than SE.
Strong S/SE with big swell: Waves can get large and sometimes “close out”.

Downwind & Session Suggestions
-
Downwind route idea: You can launch at Sunset Beach and ride northward toward Big Bay (or further) when conditions allow, enjoying a longer stint on the water.

-
Morning vs Afternoon: Mornings tend to be lighter wind but more manageable for warms‑ups or less intense sessions. Afternoons often bring stronger thermal wind — more thrilling, but also more crowded.
